Lockdown Systems

Lockdown Systems

In an age marked by increasing threats to public safety, from terrorism to active shooter incidents, lockdown systems have emerged as a critical component of emergency preparedness.

Emergency lockdown systems are designed to rapidly secure buildings and protect occupants during emergencies, minimizing harm and enabling coordinated responses. Whilst school lockdown systems may be forefront in our minds due to recent events in the UK and all over the world, they are for any building, venue or site where relatively large numbers or the public are gathered. Schools, colleges, manufacturing companies, live music and event venues are just a few examples.

The importance of lockdown systems has been highlighted by legislative developments such as Martyn’s Law, officially known as the Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Act 2025, which mandates enhanced security protocols for public venues across the UK.

Martyn’s Law introduces the concept of lockdown systems, their necessity, practical applications, and their legal framework. It also outlines compliance requirements for businesses and institutions, offering a comprehensive understanding of how lockdown systems contribute to public safety.

Commercial Audio are able to design and supply audio system components which can replace or work alongside your existing communication systems to provide site wide initiation of a lockdown in response to a threat as well as voice announcements to confirm the status of the emergency to all occupants.

Messages can be tailored to your specific requirments and we are able to record these in-house for integration into the system.

FAQs

What is a lockdown audio system?

It is a way to start a site-wide lockdown and play clear voice messages so occupants know the status of the emergency. A media player/controller, stored messages and a wired emergency button work with the existing PA. Schools, colleges, factories and event venues are typical sites.

How is a lockdown system different from a fire alarm or a normal PA?

A fire alarm is for fire evacuation. A normal PA is for paging and background music. A lockdown system is for initiating lockdown and confirming status with spoken messages — for example a lockdown trigger, a staff alert, a class-change message and an all-clear. It can use the existing speakers, but it is not a substitute for a fire-detection system.

Where are lockdown audio systems used?

Anywhere a large number of people gather and staff need one action to alert the site: schools and colleges, manufacturing sites, live-music and event venues, and similar public buildings. School lockdown is the most common brief, but the same idea applies to any occupied site.

What is Martyn’s Law, and does a lockdown system make a venue compliant?

Martyn’s Law is the Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Act 2025. It requires certain premises to have public-protection procedures, including lockdown and communication, once the law is in force. An audio system can support the communication and initiation part of that plan. Buying a controller does not by itself make a building compliant — procedures, training and the responsible person still matter.

How is a lockdown alert initiated?

Staff press a wired emergency button, which triggers the controller to play the lockdown message across the PA. Kits are offered with a silver or a red button. There is no one-size-fits-all layout, and button locations should be agreed with the site’s security plan.

Can lockdown messages be customised?

Yes. Commercial Audio can record messages in-house to match the building’s wording and procedures. Sample messages on the category page include a lockdown trigger, all-clear, staff alert, class change and a test message.

Will a lockdown system work with the speakers we already have?

It is designed to work alongside, or replace parts of, the existing communication system, so the same 100V or distributed speakers can carry the messages if the amplifier and zones already cover the required areas of the site.

What is included in a lockdown kit?

A typical kit is a media player/controller, a USB drive with lockdown software and messages, and a wired emergency button. It is an audio initiation package, not door locks, access control or a full security installation.

Should lockdown messages be tested?

Yes. A dedicated test message lets staff prove the button, the player and the speakers without using the live lockdown wording. Agree a test schedule with the building’s procedures so occupants know a test from a real alert.
